Hella Rumschlag, Prairie Trace Elementary School Media Manager, has developed a collection development list that corresponds with the Indiana DOE's Curriculum Frameworks lesson plans for K-8 (http://www.lessonlocator.org). Hella created the lists after reading: Collecting the Data: Collection Development, by Nancy McGriff, Carl Harvey, and Leslie Preddy (SLMAM Vol. XX(9) May 2004). In this article the authors suggest that the titles featured in the DOE's Curriculum Frameworks lessons "should be part of the library media center collection."

The lists of all the titles recommended for each subject and grade level are available as Excel spreadsheets. The spreadsheets are sorted by subject, then standard. They may also be sorted by title, author, or lesson title. You may also sort by call #, if you fill in your own. Titles are identified as required for the lesson (R), or as titles recommended for extending the activity (E), connecting across the curriculum (C), meeting individual needs (M), or incorporating technology (I). When more than one title can fit the lesson, the category is enclosed in brackets [R].

Consider these lists as a collaboration tool. Denise Dragash, Media Specialist at Prairie Trace Elementary, recently used these spreadsheets to create a "Books and Breakfast" opportunity for teachers. She displayed books along with copies of the corresponding lessons on tables in the library for 30 minutes before school. Copies of the spreadsheets for each grade level were also available. Denise received a lot of positive feedback by making these lists helpful and immediately relevant to teachers.
